Having grown up in Pittsburgh, I relate to some of your stories. My best friend and I got into trouble for riding the streetcar from Shadyside to see "Big Mama".
Our parents didn't know where we went, and we were 11 years old. Thanks for allowing me to remember this.

I just read your story of the haunted house on Thomas St.
It was posted on the remember Crafton when site on facebook. :-)
Great story and got folks writing about the old coal yard and other stuff on Thomas.
I wrote of going there many times with my grandfather to pick up coal(he had a coal delivery company).
I always remember how good it felt to be so young and riding in that big truck!
I was not aware of your storytelling untill now,but will try to watch for a time and place to see you do your thing.
Reading the story and knowing the people and place made it mean so much more to me!
Thank you for the memories!!

I had heard many stories about "Babes in the woods" however I had never totally understood what had happened. I wanted to know more about what happened and what would lead to such a horrific crime. I googled Babes in the woods and found your story. I appreciate your passion for history, and thank you for supplying it to us.

Glad to have found your stories. The one about trolleys, particularly the pictures, brought back memories from my younger days in St. Louis. Thanks.

Hi Jack. I remember the story of the phantom panthers from my grandfather, who grew up in Pottsville in the 1880s and was a folktale collector himself. We seem to have misplaced his hand-typed story collection, so I'm pleased to see it related here. Thank you!

Jack, Thanks for posting the Regina Hartman story. I found it very interesting to say the least. I had read somewhere just one line that told of the mother who sang a song that her captive daughter remembered, but that was all. Thanks for posting the real story. One of my ancestors was Joseph Studebaker who was taken captive in Franklin Co, PA in 1756. Tom Nesbitt of PA

Thanks Jack - We're of the same era. A little note on Forbes Field. On game days when school was out I would leave our home (East End) with 15 cents bound for a Pirate game. The 15 cents wasn't for admission but for streetcar fare 2 ways and a pay phone call. Then a walk down Forbes hoping to hear that question "Hey kid - you want a ticket to the game?" Parents today might shudder at the thought but folks with tickets they couldn't use often would do this.

Periodically, I search the internet for my name. Quite surprised when I found I had been documented in one of Pennsylvania Jacks' stories about Thomas Street. Some memories were really awakened.
Jack talked about the Port Authority ... my dad was a streetcar operator and bus driver while I was in grade school. Up the street, we had one man who worked for Pepsi (he sold it to us for half price), Marty Kokel was crafton Police officer, one man was our mailman, one was an iron worker.
Sometimes entertainment was storytelling by one parent to several kids ... with another parent surprising the group with the obligatory "BOO!" or appropriate sound effects for the story being told.
Again, thanks for the memory jogging. I am finding your stories to be fascinating.
Jack

I tried to send links Lighthouses of Southern Portugal and of the Azores. This message block does not recognize the links.
The Cabo Sao Vicente lighthouse in Southern Portugal has the hyper-radiant Fresnel lens.

I found your site while doing some genealogy research; in particular my grandfather's cousin, Clara Price. The story is a sad one but I was impressed with the details that you included in the story. Thank you so much.
